His mission accomplished in 125cc with a World Championship to his name, Mike di Meglio is looking at the possibility of a 250cc move for 2009 –be it with his current Ajo Motorsport associates or as part of a different outfit.
The Frenchman secured the 2008 lower cylinder category title with victory at Phillip Island last weekend, and admitted afterwards that his future was up in the air.
A mutual understanding between himself and Team Manager Aki Ajo would facilitate his decision, despite the terms of his current deal.
“We have a two year contract with Mike, but I understand that he has spent a long time in this category and that he would want to move to 250cc”, says the Finn on his current charge.
“We are looking to maybe move up too, but at the same time perhaps the changes to the 250cc class mean that it´s not a good choice for us to go up. If it´s with us or with another team, then we will support Mike in his decision.”
Whilst some have expressed surprise at the season experienced by Di Meglio, who previously held just a solitary wet weather victory before his revelatory year, Ajo was expectant of performances at least in the same ballpark as those of 2008.
“We didn´t expect to be World Champions, but at the end of last year we spoke to Mike and I believed that there was a chance of very good results –a top three or four in the standings. It is always difficult to become World Champion though.”
