The intense heat promised to make things difficult on Sunday in Misano, with the added difficulty of some changes to the track and the narrowness of the circuit complicating overtaking moves.
There seemed to be no hope of a breakaway winner in 125cc, a class in which there is always a frantic fight for the victory. A strong of crashes befell the likes of Mike di Meglio and Stefan Bradl, but one man keeping his cool was Gábor Talmacsi.
The Hungarian gave no chance to his rivals as he powered his way clear from the line, although he had a small hiccup on the twelfth lap from which he bounced back in style for win number two of the year.
Talmacsi had been dominant in practice for the San Marino GP, having taken pole in Germany and the Czech Republic before his third in succession on Saturday. The Bancaja Aspar rider started strong with the holeshot, and tried to shake off the pack to avoid any surprises. He was the first to go round in under 1´44, and had an ample advantage over the remaining contenders after doing so for five laps in succession. On the thirteenth lap he set the fastest lap of the race as he attempted to catch Bradley Smith, a beneficiary of Talmacsi's lap eleven crash.
Pole, victory and the circuit record of 1.43.729 allowed him to move up one place in the classification to third, r5 points venid leader Di Meglio.
“From the start I tried to escape from the others, and I used the confidence picked up over the weekend. I think that the strategy worked, because Smith was the only one able to keep up with me at any point in the race”, he commented.
“In the middle of the race I made a mistake, slipping the gears, and Bradley passed me and made me think twice about the victory. However, lap by lap I got stronger and more confident in the grip of the Aprilia, so I tried to break free again when I passed him. With Bradl and Di Meglio crashing, the championship is wide open again, so we have to keep doing what we've been doing and try and win as many races as possible.”
Sergio Gadea was able to salvage a top ten from a difficult race, starting from twelfth on the grid and losing positions off the line. Gadea dropped down to eighteenth by the end of the first lap, but went all-out in search of the second group. He finally managed tenth place for more championship points, but will be eager to find a better feeling and a solution to some problems by the time the championship heads to Indianapolis.
